Intent
At Ladysmith Junior School, our computing curriculum is designed to deepen pupils’ understanding of digital technologies and prepare them for the digital demands of the modern world. Building on their prior knowledge, we aim to develop confident, responsible, and creative users of technology who can apply their skills across the curriculum and in everyday life.
Through our curriculum children will:
Develop a solid understanding of key computing concepts, including algorithms, programming, data handling, and systems.
Use a range of digital tools and software to create content, solve problems, and express ideas across different subjects.
Think critically about how technology works and begin to evaluate its impact on individuals, society, and the environment.
Understand how to stay safe, respectful, and responsible online, developing the skills to navigate the digital world with confidence and care.
Our intent is to equip all pupils, regardless of background or ability, to thrive in the 'digital world' - digitally literate and computationally confident - laying a strong foundation for future learning and participation in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
As a school we believe that, in line with the government's Education in a Connected World Framework, 'children have the right to enjoy childhood online, to access safe online spaces, and to benefit from all the opportunities that a connected world can bring to them, appropriate to their age and stage. As they grow older, it is crucial that they learn to balance the benefits offered by technology with a critical awareness of their own and other’s online behaviour and develop effective strategies for staying safe and making a positive contribution online.' Our computing curriculum plays an important part of our whole school approach to safeguarding and online safety.
What do computing lessons look like at Ladysmith?
Our computing curriculum is structured around three key strands:
These strands are revisited and developed throughout each year group, allowing pupils to build on prior knowledge and make meaningful connections in their learning. Each objective is carefully mapped against the National Curriculum to ensure clear progression and comprehensive coverage.
Computing teaching is informed by the Teach Computing scheme of learning, which has been developed by the National Centre for Computing Education. Lessons incorporate a range of resources and approaches, including the use of iPads, Chromebooks, and 'unplugged’ paper-based activities, to support different learning styles and promote engagement. Every lesson begins with a retrieval or recap activity to revisit previous learning and assess understanding. This supports knowledge retention and helps prepare children for new concepts introduced during the lesson.
Online safety is an integral part of our provision and is explicitly taught through the Jigsaw PSHE programme, and regularly revisited in computing, ensuring children understand how to stay safe and act responsibly in an increasingly digital world.
How do we make sure that every child suceeds?
Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all learners. Planning is carefully adapted to ensure all children can engage meaningfully with computing and demonstrate their understanding of key concepts.
We continually assess pupils throughout teaching, addressing misconceptions and providing additional support where needed.
