Religious Education

Intent
At Ladysmith Juniors we serve a diverse community made up of people of many different faiths and none. We believe that Religious Education supports children to better understand different religious and non-religious worldviews, which in turn leads to a greater understanding and respect for the views of others. At an individual level this supports children’s moral and spiritual development. Within our community, it encourages children to develop respect and to challenge stereotypes, fostering unity and cohesion within our classrooms and school. More broadly, our RE curriculum supports children in developing the fundamental British Value of mutual respect  and tolerance and helps to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in modern Britain.

What do RE lessons look like at Ladysmith Juniors?
We use the Devon and Torbay Agreed Syllabus to deliver a rigorous, progressive RE curriculum that prepares our children for life in 21st Century Britain. The scheme has been designed and written by experts and is frequently updated. This scheme is then adapted by our teachers to best support the needs of the children in their class. Our RE lessons are designed to encourage critical thinking and to celebrate diversity. Children are encouraged to explore, develop and share their thinking. To support this process, teachers use a wide variety of strategies to develop oracy, such as collaborative learning, sentence stems and explicit vocabulary teaching.

How do we make sure that every child succeeds?
Our curriculum aims to be inclusive for all so our planning is carefully adapted to make sure it can be accessed by all of our children and they all have an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding. We continually assess the children throughout our teaching and, if any are in danger of falling behind, we offer additional support.

Whilst Religious Education is a statutory requirement for all state-funded schools, as a parent, you do have the right to withdraw your child from, part of or all, RE lessons if you wish to do so. If this is something you are considering or would like to know more about, please make an appointment to discuss this with the Headteacher. To do this please contact the school office.
